BUDDHISM BASICS page 30 The Buddhist MonkPerhaps we need monks now more than ever. Since technically, a monk must reside and be supported by his temple, then monks need to live in a temple and travel from their each day. But this limits the availability of monks to those who live near a temple. I propose that each local sect support monks who live in pairs, in cities, in apartments, where they are close to people all day long and can inspire and help them. The monks would need to have their rent paid so it would need to be paid yearly, hopefully providing a "MONTH FREE DISCOUNT." (12 months for the price of 11 months.) Then, the monks could attend weekly classes back at their nearest main temple to stay connected. But we don't support religions any more, and encourage them to help others. We don't support trade unions any more, and give them credit for the labor laws they initiated. We don't support our government any more, and give credit for how they uphold the Constitution. We don't support our presidents and kings any more, with respectful comments and "thank yous." We don't support the elderly or look to them for advice, as we hide them away in 'homes.' We don't support our parents and make certain their lives are full, rewarding, and that they've accomplished their dreams. We've lost respect. In Shaolin Chi Mantis Traditional Gongfu school classes, I teach that, "Respect = Appreciation." Each of us must appreciate something before we respect it. The more we appreciate something, the more respect we should show. Then perhaps, respect will grow, in America.
