BUDDHISM BASICS page 31

The 4 Principles of Nature

The Four Principles of Nature can by compared to the Four Seasons of Nature.

The Coyote, of American Zen, has written a set of poetry books based upon this concept of 4 seasons.

Coyote's poetry books will eventually be grouped into one book: SEASON OF FOURS

Autumn Flavors

Winter Flowers

Spring Fevers

Summer Forevers

The orientals have always excelled at mathematics. Geometry is just another way to create order in the universe, similar to deciding what time it is.

The four forces of nature are prominent in my Lakota Sioux training as well. I teach my students that the Daoists of China were the Native Americans of the orient.

Whether you want to believe in the literal concepts, e.g. The North = White = purification... or perhaps take it to the next level of awareness realizing that purifying ourselves needs to happen somehow and the concept of it coming from the north just gives you a chance to focus on it facing that direction... if it helps it helps.

Most ceremonies are ridiculous, because no one gets smarter or more spiritual when they attend them.

So create your own ceremonies and interactions with the forces of Nature and spirituality. Decide that the morning sun represents a golden power with the forces of enlightenment and new creativity...

It may be bogus -- but if it works for you it is not bogus.

We are a world mixed up, mixed together, interbred, with new names for all the old countries...

Look around for ceremonies, beliefs, or concepts that work for you in your life.
